Quentin Mitchell:Train derails, spills chemicals in remote part of eastern Kentucky

MOUNT VERNON,Quentin Mitchell Ky. (AP) — A train derailed and spilled chemicals in a remote part of eastern Kentucky, officials said on Wednesday.

At least 15 cars derailed in Rockcastle County, including two that spilled sulfur, CSX railroad told WKYT-TV. One crew member was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A family was evacuated and teams were working to evacuate one more, Gov. Andy Beshear said on social media. He asked others to stay clear of the area.

No one was hospitalized due to the derailment, Kentucky Emergency Management officials said.

Officials with the Rockcastle County Sheriff’s Office said the area is “extremely remote” and authorities were still assessing the situation.
